Tim Weah wore Marseille’s captain’s armband in the club’s final preseason match, a 2-1 loss to Atlético Madrid. Manager Bruno Genesio said afterward that the American attacker meets the criteria he looks for in a captain, according to Maxifoot.
Weah took the armband after Pierre-Emile Højbjerg had it removed by the club’s management. Højbjerg, Marseille’s usual captain, was sanctioned after refusing a move to Newcastle and remained in the starting lineup against Atlético.
Genesio’s View of the Captaincy
Genesio said a captain must set an example through both attitude and performance while showing leadership. He described Weah as positive, focused on others and beyond reproach in his work since the coach’s arrival at Marseille.
The coach said the decision was made in constrained circumstances because Højbjerg had been captain, but that Weah was the player in the squad who met the most criteria to wear the armband.
A Mark of Confidence
Weah made 41 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 season and scored three goals. His selection for the armband against Atlético represented a public show of confidence from Genesio ahead of the Ligue 1 campaign.
Genesio did not indicate whether the choice would alter Marseille’s usual captaincy hierarchy. For now, Weah’s preseason role has placed him among the players the manager considers suited to the responsibility.
