NYCFC drew 1-1 with Toronto FC on Saturday night, with Nicolás Fernández scoring his 14th goal of the season before Dániel Sallói equalized in the 70th minute after coming off the bench. Matt Freese made five saves as NYCFC remained winless in five straight games, while Toronto extended its unbeaten run to five.
It was the second 1-1 draw between the teams this season. They also played to a draw on July 31 at Yankee Stadium.
Fernández Gives NYCFC the Lead
Toronto had much of the first-half momentum, but NYCFC broke through in the 29th minute. Fernández received the ball in a center-right position, moved to his left and hit a low shot between two defenders and inside the right post from near the top of the penalty arc.
The goal was Fernández’s 14th of the season. Only Leo Messi, with 18, and Petar Musa, with 16, have scored more in MLS this season.
Sallói’s Second-Half Equalizer
Toronto’s response came from the bench. Sallói replaced Derrick Etienne Jr. in the 55th minute and scored 15 minutes later.
On the counterattack, Theo Corbeanu ran onto a long ball from Alonso Coello just outside the right edge of the penalty box. Corbeanu’s first-touch cross found Sallói, who finished from close range to make it 1-1.
Toronto had chances to win after halftime, while NYCFC did not threaten to retake the lead after the equalizer.
Freese Makes Five Saves
Freese made five saves for NYCFC in the draw.
Context
NYCFC is 7-8-7 and has not won in five straight games. Toronto is 5-7-10, unbeaten in its last five games and has one loss in eight matches since the World Cup break.
The teams have now split the points in both of their meetings this season, with each match ending 1-1.
